Knowledge Compounds Through Links, Not by Accumulating Note Count

The core insight is a quiet inversion of the usual instinct. Most people treat a note system as a collection — more notes means more knowledge. But the slip-box operates by a different logic: it is a network, and networks grow in value through connections, not nodes.
The compounding threshold
The first hundred notes feel unremarkable. Each sits mostly alone, touching a few others. Value appears to be linear — and modest. But past a certain density of links, something shifts: new connections begin to form on their own, because every new note has many existing neighbours it can reach. The system starts to think *with* you, not just store *for* you. Reading.md
This is the compounding analogy in full:
- Early stage — notes are isolated, links are sparse, the return seems low.
- Growth stage — each new note immediately touches many prior ideas, multiplying relevance.
- Emergent stage — combinations appear that no single note could produce alone.

Why links, not folders

This is why links beat folders for navigating a slip-box. Folders encode a taxonomy decided *before* you understand the material; links encode relationships discovered *after*. The link is epistemically honest — it says "these ideas touch each other," rather than "this idea belongs to category X."
Tags are a partial remedy but are weaker: they require you to remember and maintain a consistent labelling scheme, which is a cognitive cost. Links are structural and self-documenting.
Connecting to atomicity
The compounding only works if the notes are truly atomic. A note that bundles three ideas can only link as a unit; its sub-ideas are hidden from the network. A single-idea note can link independently in three different directions, multiplying its surface area for connection.
This is the deep reason why atomicity is the unit of re-use: the smaller and cleaner the idea, the more contexts it can simultaneously belong to.
The slip-box as thinking partner
