An atomic note is the smallest unit of re-use. When a note carries only one idea, it stays portable: it can be linked into a chain about creativity, *and* a chain about cognition, *and* a chain about productivity — simultaneously, without copying, without distortion.
A note that bundles three ideas can only ever live where *all three* ideas are relevant at once. That is nearly nowhere. Atomicity is therefore not a stylistic choice; it is what makes the slip-box's link graph possible at all.
Why Atomicity Enables Unexpected Reconnection
The surprise of a slip-box — the moment a note written about philosophy links naturally to a note written about software — only happens because each note is context-free by design. One idea travels light.
Consider the contrast:

Atomicity as a Test of Understanding
There is a secondary benefit: you cannot write an atomic note about something you do not understand. If you bundle two ideas together, you can hide behind vagueness at the seam between them. A single, self-contained claim forces you to own it completely.
This connects directly to writing as the tool that makes you think: the act of distilling a passage down to one transferable idea *is* the comprehension, not a record of it. If you cannot isolate the idea, you have not yet grasped it. Reading.md

Relationship to Other Slip-Box Principles
Atomicity does not stand alone — it is the foundation that the rest of the method rests on:

The Compounding Threshold
Atomicity also explains why the first hundred notes feel unproductive. Each note is individually small; the network is sparse. Past a threshold of links, new connections start forming on their own — not because the notes changed, but because the surface area of possible links grew faster than the note count. Reading.md
That emergent behaviour is only possible if every node in the network is clean and singular. A bundled note is a knot in the graph; an atomic note is a free connector.
