Getting started
Follow these four steps to go from a blank notebook to a living, queryable wiki. Cairni guide.md
Step 1 — Create a notebook
A notebook is a self-contained wiki organized around one topic — a research project, a course, a set of meetings, or anything else. Give it a clear name so you know what belongs there.
Step 2 — Add your sources
Drop in the material you want Cairni to learn from. You can add:
- Files — PDF, Markdown, TXT, or DOCX
- Pasted text — copy anything directly into the editor
- Web URLs — import a page from the internet
- Notion — connect your Notion workspace to bring pages in
- Audio — record a meeting or voice note; Cairni transcribes and then compiles it
See What you can add for the full breakdown.
Once you save a source, Cairni compiles it: it summarizes the material, writes or updates concept and entity pages, cross-links them, and traces every claim back to its original source. See How Cairni works for details on that pipeline.
Step 3 — Ask the wiki a question
Open the wiki and type a question in plain language. Answers are grounded in your pages, and every answer cites the source it came from. If an answer is particularly useful, you can save it back as a new page — so the wiki gets smarter over time.
Not sure what to ask? Start with something broad like *"Give me an overview of everything here"* or *"What are the key ideas across my sources?"*
Step 4 — Invite teammates or publish
You start as a team of one. When you're ready:
- Invite teammates — shared workspaces with per-notebook access control, approvals, and comments.
- Publish publicly — make any wiki readable by anyone (and discoverable by search and AI answer engines) with one click.
You can also export your wiki at any time — your knowledge stays yours. Cairni guide.md
